To the New York State Legislature and Governor Kathy Hochul
We, the undersigned New Yorkers, believe every voter should be able to support the candidate they like best without worrying about “spoiling” the race, and that winners should have the support of a majority of voters.
Ranked-choice voting does both. Voters rank candidates in order of preference. If no one wins a majority of first choices, the last-place candidate is eliminated and those ballots count toward each voter’s next choice, until one candidate has majority support.
We urge you to:
- Pass Assembly bill A90 to bring ranked-choice voting to more New York primary elections;
- Revive and pass legislation, like 2023–24’s A4351, extending ranked-choice voting to general and special elections; and
- Let counties, cities, towns, and villages adopt ranked-choice voting for their own elections.
New York City has shown it works. It’s time for the rest of New York.
